Dramaturgy - a hard art to master
So I've been watching LOTS (and damned you webz for having me have a hard time finding 0205 in the right format!) and I'm almost at the end of the first season.
I love the series for its humanism and comparing this to another 'special kid' series, the maturity of the dramaturgy is stunningly constant and effective. I guess it's because it's based on books and not fanservice. I think SPN post season 1 and 2 has scarred me for life! *g*
Aside from the eps people told me I would love, and I did, I especially loved the male confessor dilemma and the resolution. There are so many things that soothes my nerves in comparison to the outright disdain and anger I felt towards the morality of the fandriven, more antagonistic mood of SPN. The themes are the classical ones; the battle between good and evil and the gray zones in between. Except there really are gray zones on LOTS and no professed righteous man. This story rings so much truer to the Jungian archetypes and the humanistic verse. It's in no way new and revolutionary, but familiar storytelling set in stunning surroundings and with hot actors. What more can you ask for? I did warm up to Richard and yes, Craig is hot but he's sadly nowhere near JPad. I don't know what it's with that man but since he's had the power to have me hang on for a couple of seasons worth of pure crap, he has something special, that one is granted. Worst fricken thing is that I don't know exactly what it is that makes me feel for his character. It's not just the hotness of the actor in this case. Damn you JPad for making me want to adopt Sam effing Winchester! I do not have that relationship with Craig as Richard even if his story is far better told.
This all just proves how fricken nutty TV-world (or entertainment at large) is if this show gets axed while crying on the hood of the Impala is renewed? Granted, it will just be a sort of low-cost space filler next season with nothing left to lose, but still. Then again, we do have shows like America's next top model, which says a lot. *rolls eyes*
It still cracks me up that Kripke as Chuck had to publicly excuse himself to the Samfans with his admission that Becky and he broke up. Then of course he really put his foot in his mouth by adding that he "respected her too much". If I were a Dean-girl I'd be fucking pissed because what was said out loud was that he liked 'whoring' better! Good lord that was harsh!
